About

I help ambitious independents look like they mean it.

I’m Wren Calder, an independent art director and designer based in Lisbon. I started out setting type at a small letterpress in London, which is still where most of my ideas begin: with paper, ink and a lot of sketching before anything touches a screen.

Before going independent in 2021, I spent seven years in studios, leading identity work at Studio Ferro in Milan and designing for cultural clients at North & Field in Copenhagen. Those years taught me how good work survives contact with budgets, committees and deadlines.

Today I keep the practice deliberately small. I take on a handful of projects each year and collaborate with a trusted bench of photographers, developers and printers, so you always work directly with the person doing the design.

(01)Approach

Three steps, no surprises

  1. 01

    Listen

Every project starts with a long conversation about your audience, your ambitions and what hasn’t worked before.

  2. 02

    Explore

I sketch widely before narrowing down, and share honest work in progress instead of polished surprises.

  3. 03

    Craft

Once the direction is right, I sweat the details: type, colour, print specs and files your team will actually use.
